I.
you died on a tuesday
day after memorial day
in north countrywhere you took your family in the summer time
where you lived out your daysin solace
in peace
in quietyou died in hospice
without waking
without dreaming
without leaving your bedjust silence
just death
just youand the empty room
at 9:30 in the morning
near lake michiganII.
and i was grateful to see you
one last timewith my son
all of two years oldsaying hello
saying goodbye
saying “love you great grandpa”in his high overtoned
over pitched
beautiful wayas i kissed you on the forehead
made the sign of the cross
and told you i loved youand i knew you were leaving
i knew it was almost over
as your eyes flutteredand your face looked ready
looked done
looked onto other worlds
other lifetimes
with grandma waiting
and friends calling to you
with open armsyou were 94
it was time to go
time to leavetime to start again
goodbye old soul
goodbye grandpa
goodbyeand thank you.

I am sorry for your loss.
This is so well written it brought tears to my eyes. I’m sorry, but at least he’s moved onto a better life now; and he’s always waiting for you.
Saying goodbye is such a blessing if its possible. You are very lucky to have had that priviledge. And i am sorry for your loss also xx
